(
1895, San Petersburgo, Rusia–después de ene. 1939).
Jefe de la policía secreta soviética. Se unió al Partido Comunista en marzo de 1917 y fue comisario político en el Ejército Rojo durante la guerra civil rusa. Luego ascendió en la jerarquía política y en 1927 era funcionario del comité central del partido en Moscú y favorito de
Stalin. Se convirtió en miembro del comité central del partido (1934) y sucedió a Guénrij Yágoda como jefe de la policía de seguridad soviética o NKVD (
1936). Organizó la fase más dura de la Gran purga (
ver purgas políticas), conocida como Yézhovshina. En 1938 se había convertido en objeto de las sospechas de Stalin y fue reemplazado por Lavrenti Beria como jefe de la NKVD. Desapareció en 1939 y probablemente fue ejecutado.
